A mixed-breed chicken.
Cameo was only a few days old when she was purchased from a market in St. Louis. However, she quickly grew too big for her city home and was brought to the Humane Society of Missouri headquarters in spring 2009. We knew the best home for her was Longmeadow Rescue Ranch where she can have lots of room and live with other chickens, geese and ducks.
Cameo eats pelleted feed designed for domestic fowl and all the insects she can forage for when she's roaming the ranch grounds. She receives regular deworming. At night Cameo and the other fowl living at the ranch sleep in a special house with roosts and nests designed just for them.
Cameo likes to follow people around the barns looking for treats; she even raids the horses' feeders when they are turned out for exercise. Sometimes ranch hands find eggs laid by Cameo in a horse feeder. She is learning to walk on a harness so she can join our other animal ambassadors at Barn Buddy events. Cameo loves the days when she can just wander around the ranch with her other fowl pals searching for grubs and worms in the grass.
